Open Enrollment is your once-a-year opportunity to get the health coverage you need—whether you’re self-employed, running a small business, or simply looking for a better plan. At PolicyMates, we make sure you understand your options, avoid costly mistakes, and get the coverage that actually fits your life.

Here’s what you need to know for the upcoming enrollment season.

Open Enrollment is the period when individuals can:

  • Enroll in a new health insurance plan
  • Renew or change their existing plan
  • Apply for premium subsidies or tax credits

For most people, this is the only time of year to make changes unless they qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP).

  • Starts: November 1, 2024
  • Ends: January 15, 2025

You should enroll during Open Enrollment if:

  • You’re self-employed or a freelancer with no job-based coverage
  • You lost coverage from an employer or Medicaid
  • You want to compare plans or access lower-cost options through subsidies
  • You’re turning 26 and coming off a parent’s plan
  • You retire early

If you don’t enroll by January 15, you may:

  • Have to wait until next year
  • Qualify only if you experience a qualifying life event (e.g., job loss, move, divorce, birth of a child)
  • Purchase a Short Term Medical Insurance to bridge the gap until next open enrollment

Marketplace (ACA) plans — eligible for tax credits

Off-exchange plans — for higher income or unique coverage needs

ICHRA or group coverage — if you’re an employer offering benefits

Ancillary plans — like dental, vision, accident, or critical illness

To get started, gather:

  • Estimated household income
  • Social Security numbers for all applicants
  • If you are Not a US citizen – immigration status information.
  • List of doctors or medications you want to keep
  • Dependent information

At PolicyMates, we don’t chase you—we guide you. We’re independent, transparent, and always on your side. Whether you need one plan or help with family or employee coverage, we’ll walk you through every step.

You can schedule a call, submit a quote request, or just start with a question.
